The Williamson Tunnels represent to me one of those wonderful occasions when fact is truly stranger than fiction. The tale of a wealthy eccentric who paid his workforce to dig a labyrinth of tunnels beneath the city of Liverpool has conjured up many a myth of apocalyptic survival, smuggling and religious extremism. The more likely truth is that Joseph Williamson had set up a “work for benefits” scheme that justified his charitable donations with hard labour. Whether insane or mundane, let us celebrate the fact that they inspire such wonder in the minds of everyone who discovers them.

Throughout 2013 we compiled a playlist of music and sounds, some songs recorded specifically for this project and others recorded in Liverpool since 2008 that we felt particularly evoked the spirit of the tunnels. This was played back in various locations underground and recorded using a simple condenser microphone. Although rough and ready this was an attempt to capture the atmosphere and historic resonance of the tunnels that was later edited into a seamless mix that we hope contains the narrative of our visit.
